This ongoing, ever-growing list of giant monster films is divided into several parts. The main division is between the Western or Hollywood tradition and the Japanese tradition (daikaiju eiga), which, though it developed from the Western tradition, became so distinctive that there is value in keeping it separate. On occasion, the definition of what constitutes a giant monster may be seen to have become fairly loose. For reference purposes I have included films that feature prehistoric animals the larger ones, at any rate. I have also included a number of mechanised monster flicks, as there are at least a few giant alien robot and mecha films that use the tropes ofdaikaiju eigaand have all the combative, city-crunching enthusiasm of their flesh-and-blood counterparts. Some of the films included are definitely stretching the definition, but I have my own devious interest in having them there.
